The Castelo Branco embroidery dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries and carries elements of both Oriental and European influences. It is renowned for its use of natural silk threads on handcrafted linen.The motifs of Castelo Branco embroidery are often floral and natural, such as olive branches, carnations, and tulips. Among the most emblematic motifs is the phoenix—a symbol of rebirth, immortality, and spiritual strength. Its presence in this embroidery is not merely decorative; it carries deep meaning, evoking ideas of eternity and renewal—values often associated with wedding trousseaus, where this embroidery was traditionally used.
The Castelo Branco Embroidery holds a GI (Geographical Indication) certification, owned by the Municipality of Castelo Branco, and is certified by the certification body A.CERTIFICA.
