Originating from the wool embroidery on regional costumes, the Viana do Castelo Embroidery is one of the country’s most beautiful traditional embroideries, enchanting with its simplicity and grace.
This embroidery is developed on three bases: linen, wool, and tulle. It uses wool thread (on wool or linen, particularly for costumes) and cotton thread (for linens and shirts) in white, blue, and red, with motifs of camellias, teeth, snails, hearts, crosses, etc., on linens. For costumes, there is greater freedom of colors and the addition of non-textile materials, such as beads, sequins, paillettes, and tape.
