Chita is a printed cotton fabric originating from India, introduced to Europe by the Portuguese in the 15th century. This fabric gained great popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries, both in decoration and clothing. The tradition of Alcobaça cloths, however, dates back to the 16th century.
Chita de Alcobaça is characterized by highly colorful, stereotypical patterns of Indo-European influence, illustrated with broad stripes and varied decorations. These patterns include birds, exotic birds, animals, flowers, fruits, human figures, cornucopias, amphoras, nests, and tropical fruits. Each pattern has its own name and varies according to the color of the border.
