O melhor de Portugal

17th century Portuguese Tiles Diamond mini umbrella

The Diamond Tip Tile is a feature of the 17 century glazed tiles. This pattern – still in use – has a three-dimensional effect through a simulation of prisms giving the effect of relief which in fact is just an optical illusion given the way the tiles have been painted.

Emerging in the 17th century, the repetition tiles were frequently used with a technique practiced with the help of pliers (“alicate” in Portuguese), or with repeated patterns in a unique piece.  The inspiration for the creation of these pieces was varied, the first Portuguese pattern tiles were of Italian and Flemish influence, recreating the motives used in the Renaissance flooring.
